What it is
Streptomycin sulphate (sold as Streptocycline) is an antibiotic, not a conventional fungicide — it targets bacteria, not fungi. Agricultural use is tightly regulated in India because the same antibiotic class is used in human and animal medicine, and overuse in farming contributes to antibiotic resistance more broadly.
Used for
Effective only against bacterial diseases — bacterial blight, bacterial wilt and similar infections — on crops and diseases named on its approved label. It has no effect on fungal disease, so correctly identifying a bacterial infection first matters more here than with a general fungicide.
How to use
Use strictly at the label dose; it is not meant as a routine preventive spray. Apply only when bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, and only on the crops listed on the label.
Safety
A restricted-use product. Overuse builds bacterial resistance that can affect both crop treatment and, indirectly, antibiotic effectiveness in general — use it only when needed, not on a fixed schedule. Wear gloves and a mask while handling the powder.
