What it is
Partly decomposed sphagnum moss harvested from northern bogs. It holds many times its own weight in water while staying loose and airy, which is exactly the combination roots need in a container where real soil would compact and suffocate them.
Used for
A standard ingredient in potting mix, seed-starting trays and nursery beds, usually blended with perlite, compost or coco peat rather than used alone. Also used to lower soil pH slightly for acid-loving plants.
How to use
Peat moss is bone-dry and water-repellent straight from the bag — wet it thoroughly before mixing, since dry peat can take a long soak to absorb water evenly. Mix into soil or compost at the ratio stated on the pack rather than using it as a standalone growing medium.
Safety
The dry material is very dusty when opened or handled; wear a mask and dampen it before mixing to keep dust down. Not a safety concern once wet and mixed in.
