What it is

Cold-pressed oil extracted from neem (Azadirachtin indica) seed kernels. The active compound, azadirachtin, disrupts an insect's feeding and moulting hormones rather than killing on contact, which is why neem acts more slowly than a synthetic insecticide but leaves fewer resistant survivors behind. It is one of the oldest botanical pesticides used in Indian farming and is accepted in organic certification programmes.

Used for

Effective against soft-bodied sucking pests — aphids, whiteflies, thrips, mealybugs and mites — and against young larvae before they bore into fruit or stem. Works on vegetables, fruit trees, cotton and most field crops. Weaker against hard-shelled adult beetles and established borers already inside the plant.

How to use

Shake the bottle well before measuring — the oil separates on standing. Mix with water and a wetting agent (sticker) so the spray clings to the waxy leaf surface instead of rolling off; neem oil does not dissolve in water on its own. Spray in the early morning or evening when bees are not foraging and the sun will not scorch wet leaves. Cover the underside of leaves, where most sucking pests feed. Repeat every 7–10 days, since neem breaks down in sunlight within a few days and does not keep killing after that.

Safety

Toxic to bees and other pollinators while wet, so never spray on open flowers during the day — evening application lets it dry before bees are active again. Mildly irritating to skin and eyes; wear gloves and avoid inhaling the spray mist. Considered low-risk to humans and beneficial insects like ladybirds once dry, which is why it suits mixed and organic farms. Store away from direct sunlight and heat, and keep out of reach of children.
