What it is
Calcium sulphate, a naturally occurring mineral that supplies calcium and sulphur without changing soil pH — unlike lime, which is useful when your soil already has the right pH and only needs structural or nutrient correction.
Used for
Breaks up hard, compacted or clay-heavy soil by displacing sodium from clay particles, which improves water infiltration and root penetration. Also reclaims saline and sodic soils over repeated seasons, and supplies calcium and sulphur to crops like groundnut and pulses that need both in the root zone.
How to use
Spread evenly on the soil surface before irrigation or ahead of expected rain, so water carries it down into the root zone. On heavy clay or sodic soil, repeated seasonal applications work better than one large dose, since gypsum dissolves slowly and needs water movement to take effect.
Safety
Low health risk — it is used in plaster and food processing — but wear a dust mask when spreading in still air, since fine mineral dust can irritate the lungs with prolonged exposure.
