What it is
Finely ground dolomite rock, a natural mineral containing both calcium and magnesium carbonate. It raises soil pH over time while supplying two secondary nutrients, which is why it is used instead of plain agricultural lime on soils that are both acidic and magnesium-poor.
Used for
Corrects acidic soil (low pH) and magnesium deficiency together. Right for red and lateritic soils common in high-rainfall regions, and for soils that have been under continuous cropping without lime for several seasons. Not needed on soils that are already neutral or alkaline — a soil test is the only reliable way to know which you have.
How to use
Spread evenly over the field and mix into the top 10–15 cm of soil before sowing, ideally a few weeks ahead so it has time to react. Dolomitic lime works slowly, over weeks to months, not instantly like a soluble fertiliser — plan the application well before the season it needs to help.
Safety
Do not mix directly with urea or any ammonium-based fertiliser; the combination releases ammonia gas and the field loses nitrogen into the air instead of into the soil. Leave at least a few weeks between a lime application and a urea application. Wear a dust mask when spreading in still, dusty conditions.
